SUMMARY:Participatory Budgeting
DESCRIPTION:Participatory Budgeting \nYOU DECIDE HOW TO SPEND TAXPAYER DOLLARS\nNew York City is experiencing a new kind of democracy. Through Participatory Budgeting\, residents of ten Council Districts are directly deciding how to spend $14 million of taxpayer money. From September 2013 to April 2014\, community members are exchanging ideas\, working together to turn ideas into project proposals\, and voting to decide what proposals get funded. The following information is for voters in City Council District #23. Click the links at the bottom for other Council Districts. \nGlen Oaks Public Library\n256-04 Union Turnpike\nGlen Oaks\, NY 11004 \nTuesday/Wednesday this week @ 2:30-6:30PM \nEach voter can choose up to five Participatory Budgeting projects. We suggest that you select: \nSchools project # 1 & 2 as your first and second choices (technology products and related resources are needed)\nLibraries project # 1 & 2 as your third and fourth choices (security issues and making our libraries safer)\nSchools project # 3  fifth choice (gym project for Martin Van Buren HS) \nWhile these items should in our opinion be a part of the semi-annual budgeting process which the Mayor’s Office is involved with each year\, this opportunity puts you the voter in the drivers seat. Now the point is to vote for these projects in this order and you can actually influence the projects in this district. Remember\, in this last election fewer than 24% of all registered voters determined the outcome for all city-wide offices. This was shameful. Let your voices be heard. \nGet out on Tuesday or other days/hours and do your part and vote even if not in our suggested order. \nClick here to learn more about Participatory Budgeting. \nClick here for the full list of projects. \nClick here for the full list of voting locations.
